Unseen 50 Years
Paintings by Ben Morea, 1964-65

Curated by Johan Kugelberg
June 19th – August 1st, 2014

Boo-Hooray, NYC

Opening on June 19th.
On view Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm.

Prior to founding Black Mask and Up Against the Wall Motherfucker, Ben Morea was active as an abstract painter in New York. He worked on paper as well as canvas. All the work was thought lost (the work on paper still is) but five large canvases were located under a bed in Hell’s Kitchen. These amazing, original artworks were exhibited at Boo-Hooray for the first time.

This is a thrilling follow up to our exhibition on Black Mask earlier this year. Ben Morea’s marriage of radical political/philosophical thought and avant-garde art as mirrored in Black Mask and UAW/MF publications and actions is further illuminated when viewing these powerful paintings.

An illustrated catalog with text by Ben about his paintings was available at the exhibition.
